2014 VINTAGE AND WINE NOTES

The Winter rainfall nourished the vines then dropped off significantly for the unseasonably dry and windy Spring. A late Fall rain slowed the ripening of the vineyard resulting in a further week and a half of hangtime, bringing excellent tannin ripeness and allowed harvest to occur in a relatively cool weather pattern in 2014. Overall, a terrific result in the wines proving McLaren Vale’s strength as a viticulture growing region.

Block 208 - 0.73-hectare contoured planting from 1973. Elevation 220- 240m. A relatively shallow soil. Brown, yellowish-red, silty light clay with greater than 50% siltstone fragments and a layer of subsoil with over 50% quartz fragments, all sitting over a bedrock of pale-yellow siltstone. Cabernet harvested 7 March 2014.

Handpicked from old, contoured block 208, destemmed and whole berry sorted with light berry breaking to open fermentation. 4-day cold soak, pumped over daily with approximately 21 days on skins. Basket pressed with light pressings added back to free-run, hard pressings separate. Matured in 100% new French oak barriques for 15 months.

TASTING NOTE

Nose: Bright red cherry, super floral rose petal, blueberry pie. Palate: savory fruit, black tea, faint tomato, tannins are still quite prevalent. - Chris Carpenter, Winemaker
