2020 Preservative Free Shiraz

The PF Shiraz is made from grapes grown on our certified biodynamic single estate vineyard, grown without herbicides, fungicides or synthetic chemicals. It is made without additions of any kind: sulphur (preservative), acid, tannin or finings. It’s a medium bodied, fresh, fruit driven wine that is delicious enjoyed as a young wine. With that in mind, we do have PF Shiraz back to our first vintage of 2013 that is still showing some of lovely vibrant characters.

VINTAGE SUMMARY

The 2020 harvest will be remembered for many years, mostly for all the wrong reasons. The growing season was marred by a very hot spring and the bushfires that ravaged vast areas of Australia. We feel incredibly blessed that in McLaren Vale we were untouched by either the fires or smoke taint. The very hot spring did lead to lowest yields on our records, but as the grapes started their ripening process the weather miraculously cooled to one of the most mild ripening seasons, resulting in wonderful concentration of flavour, retention of natural acidity and brightness of fruit, but above all beautiful finesse and balanced tannins.

WINEMAKING

De-stemmed and mechanically sorted with a large percentage of whole berries retained and tipped into open-top fermenters. After a few days of gentle cold soaking, we allowed the must to warm, and wild fermentation to occur. The wine was carefully basket pressed after approximately 2 weeks on skins. No additives were used throughout entire production. Bottled in May 2020, after completing malolactic fermentation. No fining occurred, just filtration.
